Victoria is bracing for an extended lockdown with 40 Covid infections, more than 250 exposure sites, and another looming aged care disaster.
Health bosses are holding their breath waiting for tests from a nursing home in Melbourne after a staff member tested positive to coronavirus.
They are in a race against time to trace the virus in the next day and stop it ripping through aged care facilities and killing hundreds, as happened in 2020.
The employee, who is in her 50s, was infectious for two days while she worked at the Arcare facility in Maidstone, before testing positive on Saturday.
Contact tracers have been scrambling work out how she caught the virus because she has no known links to Victoria's other infections, which swelled to 40 after five more positive test results emerged on Sunday.
University of South Australia chair of epidemiology Adrian Esterman said the next 48 hours will be critical in determining whether vulnerable residents were at risk, and whether the state's seven-day lockdown will be extended.

The number of cases ballooned to 40 on Sunday
'There is a very fine balance between things getting in or out of control … If we see more mystery cases on Monday then alarm bells will be ringing,' he told the .
Australian Medical Association president Omar Khorshid said there was a 'signi***ant chance' the lockdown would have to be lengthened.
'We are very concerned with the Melbourne lockdown just due to the size of the number of people being contacted - last count was over 15,000 people,' he said.
Deakin University's epidemiology chair Catherine Bennett described the outbreak was 'very worrying'.
'This isn't going to necessarily trigger anything wider like last time, but the last thing we want is those who are older and frail to become infected,' she told The Project on Sunday night.
Dr Bennett added that about half the people in the aged care facility had received one vaccination dose, but it was not clear how many were fully vaccinated.
'Having someone not knowing they are infectious at work in aged care is exactly what you don't want to have happen,' she told the Today show on Monday morning.
'This is unlikely to cause secondary cases or spread, but that's not the point.
The fact is we have got people who are not all vaccinated, only 50 per cent of the residents, who are vulnerable now with the virus inside the aged care.'
Dr Bennett said it was concerning many healthcare workers aren't vaccinated.
'We know our frontline workers themselves didn't have to rely on the vaccine program even coming to the aged-care facilities, they have always had access through they have always had access through the government hubs since they started in March and so on. I do think it is a concern,' she added.
'I think people have waited.
This is what happens. If you have your first jab, you've still got to wait a couple of weeks to get the impact of that and then have your follow-up jab. Waiting comes with a cost. I think that's what we are learning now.'
Australian Medical Association president Omar Khorshid said there was a 'signi***ant chance' the lockdown would have to be lengthened
The demand at vaccination centres has grown to the point where health care workers started turning people away
'So having a worker unknowingly take the virus in, is our worst case scenario just because of the risk of serious illness amongst the people in that facility,' she said.
The aged care facility was locked down, staff were forced to wear PPE gear and all residents were locked in their rooms.
Acting Premier James Merlino said the situation is a 'very, very serious matter' and would not say whether restrictions would be eased on Friday, as planned.
'We are three days into a seven-day lockdown,' Mr Merlino said.
There is no speci*** threshold for lifting or extending lockdown, though Mr Merlino said authorities would factor in to consideration the number of new cases, the types of infections, whether there are mystery cases, the number of exposure sites, and pace of transmission.
'Today we're talking about a mystery case.
Today we're talking about aged care. There's a lot of work to do,' he said.
The staff member had been working at Arcare Maidstone while masked and asymptomatic on Wednesday and Thursday
The employee, who is in her 50s, was infectious for two days while she worked at the Arcare facility in Maidstone, before testing positive on Saturday.
Acting Victorian Premier James Merlino also announced the government will be releasing a $250million package to help businesses through the seven-day lockdown
'I go back to the advice we received just days ago and public health that we needed to go into the circuit breaker lockdown because if we can't get ahead, if we can't get ahead of this outbreak then it becomes uncontrollable.
And everybody knows what that means.'
Mandatory face masks will likely persist even after lockdown is lifted as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the demand at vaccination centres has grown to the point where health care workers started turning people away.
Melburnians could be seen queuing in near-freezing temperatures outside a walk-in clinic outside the Royal Exhibition Centre.
Footage taken from the outside of the centre showed the moment a female medical worker announced there were no more Pfizer jabs available for walk-ins.
'I've been here in the cold for an hour waiting and now they've come out and said there is no Pfizer for walk-ins,' one woman told 9 News.
'You can't get through on the phones, what are we supposed to do?
I'm looking after my mum who's not well. She's really worried.'
The federal government urged Victorians to get vaccinated following the surge in positive cases.

Elsewhere, a Melbourne restaurant is under investi*** over an alleged illegal dinner party for anti-lockdown protesters on Saturday afternoon.
More than 12 anti-vaxxers were photographed at a bar in Seddon, in the city's west, despite statewide restrictions which banned public gatherings.
The photo was shared on communication app Telegram, but deleted on Sunday following backlash by customers of the restaurant, the Herald Sun reported.
The Department of Justice and Community Safety told the newspaper it would be investigated by the government's coronavirus enforcement team.

Thousands of shoppers in Melbourne have been forced into isolation after two busy shopping centres were exposed to coronavirus.
The Victorian Health Department declared a Kmart and Coles at Epping Plaza Shopping Centre in the city's north top tier 2 public exposure sites on Sunday.
Shoppers at Chadstone Shopping Centre have also been put on high alert as customers wandered around the centre on May 26 while infected with Covid-19.
Anyone who attended the shopping centres between the specified times is required to get tested immediately and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.
